It borrows sounds from three wonderfully inconsistent English words:

• touGH gives us the “f” sound
• wOmen gives us the “i” sound
• naTIon gives us the “sh” sound

Put them together and GHOTI becomes FISH—at least according to the playful and peculiar logic of English spelling.
